Audra McDonald's talents are unmatched in her range of talents and variety as a singer, and performer. Audra McDonald, who won six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was named as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -the nation's most prestigious award for excellence in this area. Blessed with a luminous soprano, and an unrivalled talent of telling the truth in a dramatic manner, she is as much as at ease on Broadway and the opera on stage as she is in role in television and film. As well as performing on stage, she has earned a name for herself in a professional career that is a major performance and recording career. She frequently performs in world-class performances. McDonald, who was born in Fresno California to a music family, received her training in classical singing in New York's Juilliard School. The year 1994 was the year after she graduated from Juilliard School, McDonald won the Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in musical" for her performance in Carousel. Over the next four years she received two more Tony Awards under the featured actress category. These were for her Broadway performances of Terrence McGally's play Master Class and Ragtime. The actress won his fourth Tony in 2004 starring with Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun as well as in 2012. In 2012, she won five Tony Awards and was the first award in the leading actress category due to her performance in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess in the lead role. In 2014, the Tony Awards most-decorated performer in 2014 was Billie Holiday, who she performed as the title character in Lady Day At Emerson's Bar & Grill. This is exactly the role she portrayed during her performance in 2017's West End London debut for in which she's been considered for nomination to an Olivier Award. Along with making history with the most awards won by actors in competition, she also became the first to win awards across all four categories. Her other credits for theater are The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999) Henry IV (2004) 110 in the Shade (2007) Twelfth Night (2009) in which she made Twelfth Night (2009), which was her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut Shuffle Along or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921, and all That Followed (2016) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2019) as well as Ohio State Murders (2023). The Peabody Award-winning CBS program Having Our Say The Delany Sisters First 100 Years that was the first to introduce McDonald viewers to her talents as a dramatic actor. In the following years, she starred alongside Kathy Bates, Victor Garber and other actors in the highly acclaimed Disney/ABC remake of Annie in 1999, McDonald had been a regular character in the network's Law & Order Special Victims Unit. The following year, she received the first Emmy nomination for her performance on the HBO film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning show Wit, produced by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned on television network in 2003 on the drama about politics Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and featuring Josh Brolin. Then, in the year 2006, McDonald appeared on WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year, she appeared as a recurring actor on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald got the 4th Emmy nomination for her performance in the HBO film special Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in the year 2016. The Bite was a six episode pandemic themed drama produced in collaboration with Spectrum Originals in collaboration with CBS Studios. McDonald initially played U.S. lawyer Liz Lawrence (now Liz Reddick), in CBS's law-and-order drama The Good Wife, in 2009. In the year 2018, she returned to her role on The Good Fight for Paramount+ as a regular on the series. Her performance received three Critics Choice Award Nominations. The actress is currently appearing as a guest on Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which premieres on HBO.
